Shaman
Series These ethereal figures are representations of ancient pictographs (up to 5,000 years old) found in the remote Canyonlands of Utah. Their meaning has been lost over time; however, the notion of shamans and deities is certainly clear. The beautiful imagery created by these archaic tribes is as inspiring as it is mesmerizing. The main figure in these representations is ≈6" x 2" x 1/2". They are all made out of the finest quality agatized dinosaur gembone. NOTE: These pieces are currently on display at the Toklat Gallery in Basalt, CO. Their gallery format is changing and I will be removing these pieces in the near future. |
Soft Flame, Item #527 $400.00 |
Soft Flame, Item #528 $400.00 |
The
Flame "The
Flame" is a free-form, three-dimensional creation that
beautifully highlights the exquisite beauty of dinosaur
gembone. The basic shape is a three-sided form that can have
either a left-hand or right-hand twist. It has a small
triangular base that
has been fitted with a brass tube for mounting. The original Flame had 3 concave sides. With later versions, I sometimes dome one of the sides, which tends to soften the overall appearance. Because of this, I call them “Soft Flames”. As
always, the finest quality gembone is used for each piece.
The polish is exceptional. This average weight of these
pieces is 50 grams. The Flame itself is ≈ 2-3/8" tall
by ≈ 1-1/16" across the widest face. For
display, they are mounted on various materials with
interesting forms and complimentary coloration.

Moab Shaman V $1,300.00 |
The
"Moab Shaman" is a representation of the shamanistic figures
found on a pictograph panel in Courthouse Wash (Moab, Utah).
In addition to many other forms, three of these figures were
painted on a cliff face high above the Colorado River. They
have been identified as Barrier Canyon Style figures, dating
them at 1,200 to 4,000 years old. The power and majesty of the
painted figures has been captured in this stunning sculpture. The size of the shaman is 5-1/4” x 2-3/8” x 1/2”. This piece is backed by a solid slab (agate, jade or obsidian, I can't recall) to ensure permanent stability. NOTE: This piece is currently on display at the Toklat Gallery in Basalt, CO. The gallery asked to do the framing using a rich red mounting matte, but I do not have a photo of the finished piece. |
This
piece is one of my older compositions, having been completed
many, many years ago and hanging on my study wall ever since.
I've named it “Fruit”. The “base” or “trunk” (made out of
black spiderweb bone) is ≈3-1/2” high as it is positioned in
the frame. The
size including the frame is approximately 16-1/2”
wide by 12-3/4” high. The original photography of this piece was done so long ago with an ancient digital camera that the images were essentially worthless. So, I've tried again by photographing through the glass front (at an angle to avoid reflections). The result does not do this piece justice! The "stem" is actually a magnificent piece of blue-black spiderweb with gorgeous white agate swirls in some of the cells. The "fruit" are a deep blue color. Each stone is masterfully crafted and beautifully polished! NOTE: This piece is currently on display at the Toklat Gallery in Basalt, CO. The gallery asked to re-frame it, reducing the size somewhat and using a cream background, but I do not have a photo of the finished piece. |

Sculpture,
Art and Jewelry provide the best opportunity to show off
the truly incredible beauty of Agatized Dinosaur Bone.
Each and every piece I create inspires me to do more and
better work. I started off doing small
sculptures, such as eggs, spheres, paperweights, and
free-form shapes, such as “The Flame”, “The Block”, “The
Sail”, “The Wave”, and “Tadpole”. These
three-dimensional objects are shaped and polished on all
sides. Later, I developed a line of framed pieces that I called the “Evolved Plant Series”. These whimsical creations represent soft, organic, flowing life forms. The series includes such work as "Fruit", "Nuts", "Amphora", "Flower Tree", "Grapes", and "Mushrooms". This led me to an exploration of animal forms, geometric designs, abstract forms patterned after the remarkable eccentric flints of the Maya, and my most recent, reproductions of the archaic Indian pictographs (1500 to 8000 years old) found on rock panels scattered throughout southeast Utah. My work involves crafting a piece of agatized dinosaur bone (gembone) with flowing curves, ridges, valleys, swales, and saddles to create pleasing organic forms. Combined with an exceptional polish I have developed over 40 years, the result is a remarkably unique presentation. Taking advantage of the amazing color diversity of this material, every creation is distinctively one-of-a-kind! Each of the different forms will have several iterations over time, but most of them will vary significantly in color. ENJOY!! |
